Purpose of the Workshop
A workshop will be held for psychotherapists (including graduate students) to discuss the intergenerational transmission of war trauma and its implications for psychotherapy.
In the fields of healthcare, education, welfare, and private practice, it is not uncommon to encounter clients or patients whose problems are rooted in trauma caused by war—in Japan, particularly World War II. For instance, the symptoms of PTSD (including complex PTSD) or comorbid conditions such as alcohol dependency and depression observed in repatriated soldiers or professional military personnel are believed to have caused significant psychological stress for subsequent generations (e.g., children and grandchildren) from an early age.
Although cases in Japan involving clients or patients with family backgrounds linked to war trauma are not rare in psychotherapy practice, the mechanisms of such trauma and therapeutic methodologies have not been sufficiently shared or discussed.
This workshop provides an opportunity to introduce new perspectives to Japanese psychotherapy by inviting Dr. Eugen Koh, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst based in Melbourne, Australia, with extensive experience in this subject, to lead a clinical seminar for practitioners.
